India Moon Launch a success

NEW DELHI (AFP) – India's first moon mission not only makes it a serious player in space exploration but also holds the prospect of a bigger slice of the lucrative satellite launch market, analysts say.
The country staged a flawless launch Wednesday of its first unmanned lunar orbiting spacecraft Chandrayaan-1 -- the Sanskrit word for Moon Craft -- with an Indian-built rocket from its southeastern coast.
"The launch has considerable political significance as it's an assertion of India's credibility in the area of space exploration," said New Delhi-based strategic analyst Uday Bhaskar.
If all goes to plan, the 1.5-tonne satellite should be flying over the pockmarked lunar surface November 11. It's being sent on a two-year mission to map in-depth the moon's topography and its mineral and chemical properties.
The launch, greeted with chest-thumping patriotism, "demonstrated the nation's growing technological potential," said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
India sees the space journey as further boosting its diplomatic weight in the wake of the recent deal on civilian atomic cooperation with the United States that ended its nuclear pariah status.
The main exploration goal of the thrifty lunar mission -- it cost just 79 million dollars, less than half that of similar expeditions by other countries -- is to assess and map lunar mineral resources, Indian officials say.
India aims to launch the first Indian into space by 2014 and maybe to put a man on the moon by 2020.
Indian Space Research Organisation head G. Madhavan Nair has said the current mission will "unravel the mystery of the moon." But some analysts argue that enhanced global status was a far stronger motive.
"It's a moustache kind of thing -- and moustache matters," said Jane's Defence Weekly analyst Rahul Bedi, referring to India's national pride.
Asian nations have recently been at the forefront of space exploration -- a field that was previously dominated by the United States, Russia and the European Space Agency.
China, whose space programme is far more advanced than India's, was the first Asian nation five years ago to put its astronauts into space and last month staged a much publicised space walk.
"They (the Indians) are not going to add very much to what is already known," Bedi said.
But the mission represents "a technological evolution of the whole space programme in India. At the same time, India is very competitive in launching satellites and it further cements that reputation," Bedi said.
Initially set up to carry out scientific research, the space research organisation now also earns money from commercial launches with the global market worth an estimated 2.5 billion dollars a year.

Chinese space walk

BEIJING - A Chinese astronaut on Saturday performed the nation's first-ever spacewalk, the latest milestone in an ambitious program that is increasingly rivaling the United States and Russia in its rapid expansion.

Mission commander Zhai Zhigang floated out of the orbiter module's hatch in the spacewalk, shown live on state broadcaster CCTV. Tethered to handles attached to the Shenzhou 7 ship's orbital module's exterior, Zhai remained outside for about 13 minutes before climbing back inside and closing the hatch behind him.
"Shenzhou 7 has left the module, physically feel very good. Greetings to all the people of the nation and all the people of the world," Zhai said.
Fellow astronaut Liu Boming also emerged briefly from the capsule to hand Zhai a Chinese flag that he waved for an exterior camera filming the event. The third crew member, Jing Haipeng, monitored the ship from inside the re-entry module
The successful spacewalk paves the way for assembling a space station from two Shenzhou orbital modules, the next major goal of China's manned spaceflight program. China is also pursuing lunar exploration and may attempt to land a man on the moon in the next decade.
China launched its first manned mission, Shenzhou 5, in 2003, followed by a two-man mission in 2005.
Since blasting off from their northwestern China launch base on Friday, the astronauts had been largely occupied with preparing the suits and adapting to zero gravity. Meals aboard the craft have followed a typical Chinese menu, featuring versions of kung pao chicken, shrimp and dried fruit, the official Xinhua News Agency said.

A NASA probe has spotted hundreds of small surface fractures near Mars' equator that may have acted as underground natural plumbing to channel groundwater billions of years ago.

Geologists compare the fractures in the sandstone rock deposits on Mars to features called deformation bands on Earth, which can arise from the influence of groundwater in the underground bedrock. The bands and faults have strong influences on groundwater movement on Earth, and seem to have played the same role on Mars. Other research has examined how surface water from rain or snow shaped the planet surface, but many agree that groundwater has an equally important influence.
"Groundwater often flows along fractures such as these, and knowing that these are deformation bands helps us understand how the underground plumbing may have worked within these layered deposits," said Chris Okubo, a geologist with the U.S. Geological Survey in Flagstaff, Ariz. who headed up a new study of the Martian fractures.
The observations, made by NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO), showed how water has already changed the color and texture of the Martian sandstone along the fractures. Okubo's report on the finding is detailed online this month in the journal Geological Society of America Bulletin.
"This study provides a picture of not just surface water erosion, but true groundwater effects widely distributed over the planet," said Suzanne Smrekar, deputy project scientist for MRO at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., who was not part of the study. "Groundwater movement has important implications for how the temperature and chemistry of the crust have changed over time, which in turn affects the potential for habitats for past life."
Okubo and his study coauthors looked to similar patterns in Utah sandstones on Earth, where fractures are typically a few yards wide and up to several miles long. Such cracks reveal themselves as the rock layers on top erode away.

Dawah Ship

The starship C.S.S. Dawah is owned and operated by the Dawah Jumaat. The C.S.S. Dawah visits isolated asteroid mining communities in the New Malaysia, New Kalimantan, Turkmen Prime and New Kurdistan star systems; where it conducts halaqahs and khutbahs as well as making available its vast library. Often highly regarded Islamic Scholars are recruited to do tours with the C.S.S. Dawah. Most of the asteroid mining communities are very happy for a visit from the C.S.S. Dawah if only to see new faces.

The ship has a crew of 40, this includes those who run the ship and the Muslim scholars and translators on the ship. The ship has a prayer hall able to hold over 700 persons as well as several smaller meeting rooms for counseling and small halaqahs.

The Dawah Jumaat is currently raising funds to build a second ship which would be dedicated to visiting worlds outside of the confedration.

The Two legged craner is very elusive and has only been sighted twice by professional xeno-biologists. Living deep in the forests of New Daura, It gets up to 20 kilograms and eats a diet of insects and fungi which they find on the forest floor. It has a poisonous stinger in its tail which it uses only in defense not for hunting. They bear live young in litters of 2 or 3. Fro the skeletal remains we have of them they appear to have evolved from four legged animals.

The video we have here was shot by a farmer in The Hague delta the two legged craner is believed to have been driven from its home by a recent hurricane.
